Authors often make references to other texts. This is called
intertextuality. Whenever an author explicitly or implicitly refers
to other texts in order to convey a message, knowledge of these
texts are quite important for the reader to fully understand the
message of the text. A proficient reader, therefore quite often not
only needs well-developed reading skills and strategies, but also
a well-developed frame of reference.
