As one of the largest El Niños in 150 years brews in the Pacific, nations around the world are bracing for the impacts of this weather phenomenon.

Wetter than usual weather is expected to affect the southern tier of the United States and the west coasts of Central and South America.

Already in South America, the Atacama Desert, renowned for its arid climate, is full of flowers relishing in a rare abundance of rain. In June, heavy snow and rainfall in the central Andes caused severe flooding in the capital city of Santiago, Chile.

According to predictions from the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, the southern half of the United States can expect wetter, cooler weather from November through March. The northern part of the country from Washington east to the western Great Lakes will experience warmer than normal temperatures.
