So Kate, what do we need to look out for?
Well, the obvious advice is to stick to the pavements and footpaths where
they exist... and where they don't, you should always walk on the right
hand side of the road.
Oh. Why is that?
That's because you will be facing the oncoming traffic. You can see them
better, and they can see you too. Don't forget they drive on the left here!
Of course.
And if you come to a sharp bend, you should perhaps cross the road so
that the oncoming traffic can see you approaching. Here, you'd better take
these reflective armbands. The chance of being seen when wearing these
is three times higher, especially when it starts to get dark. The golden rule
is to always avoid walking with your back to the traffic whenever possible.
Is there anything else we need to know?
Yes, but I expect you know this already. Always try to keep the children
between yourself and the passing traffic. Make sure they walk on the
inside whenever possible.
And is that all?
Those are the most important points, I think. Just one more thing though...
when crossing the road, always try to use a 'zebra' crossing. They're the
most common type of pedestrian crossing and you'll recognize them by
the round flashing orange lights, called 'Belisha' beacons, by the way.
And finally... be careful, always.
